Washington State Essential Learning Goals

The Washington State Legislators have enacted laws and procedures governing education for all students. Below are the "Essential Academic Learning Requirements" (EALR) for all students, grades K-12.

EALR’s – Reading:
 1. The student understands and uses different skills and strategies to read. 
 2. The student understands the meaning of what is read.
 3. The student reads different materials for a variety of purposes.
 4. The student sets goals and evaluates progress to improve reading.

EALR’s – Communication:
 1. The student uses listening and observation skills and strategies to gain understanding. 
 2. The student uses communication skills and strategies to interact/work effectively with others.
 3. The student uses communication skills and strategies to present ideas and one’s self in a variety of situations. 
 4. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of communication.

EALR’s – Writing:
 1. The student understands and uses a writing process.
 2. The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes. 
 3. The student writes clearly and effectively.
 4. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.

EALR’s – Mathematics:
 1. The student understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics
 2. The student uses math to define and solve problems.
 3. The student uses mathematical reasoning.
 4. The student communicates knowledge and understanding in both everyday and mathematical language. 
 5. The student understands how mathematical ideas connect within mathematics, to other subjects.
